Tale of the Portuguese Rooster...

(Personalized Sketches photo of an original)

*Click on image to see it is drawn entirely with the last name: CABRAL*

*each original that I do, is done in a fade-proof ink that shows very well.
...however, some values in the sample photos/copies often are not true to life, due to camera lighting.

*some have asked about color in a drawing... The majority of the Personalized Sketches I do are black and white. ...but I have done some with color added afterwards with watercolor pencils, like this rooster.*

Now on to the Rooster Party...(and I do have a couple of little gift certificate giveaways that are used towards a Personalized Sketch of your choosing).

~~~~~~~~~~
Mr. B's great grandparents came from the Azores on ships sailing to the Hawaiian Islands. They're Portuguese. (with some Spanish, French, a teeny-tiny bit of Irish) This Rooster Party celebrates the tale of "Galo de Barcelos".
The Rooster of Barcelos has become a national symbol for Portugal. It's been said it symbolizes "The winning of justice when you fight for it". The legend is many hundred years old and there are different versions.
Come sit a spell...A Tale to tell...He tells it well...
(This cute animation was created by Daniel Oliviera Prins)
~a Willem de Kooning Academy student~
~~~~~~~~~~

This ceramic Portuguese Rooster is one of two that made its roost long ago in my hubby's childhood home. His younger sister and her family now own that home, which is so full of memories... My request for a photo was more than fulfilled, when her beautiful 12 yr old daughter sent all 4 views.

~~~~~~~~~~
Sesame Street's Big Bird at the annual Portuguese Cultural Club Festivities?... No, but how about his Portuguese...um...cousin? Galo de Barcelos
*Once again...Mr. B comes to the rescue! He found several rubbermaids full of photos! Was I surprised when this was in one of them! I didn't remember that we posed with this rooster... & as I looked at the photo, I thought maybe it was a huge statue. But then, I looked a little closer and yep, you can see this rooster has a wing and... a yellow hand??
Baby Girly-Whirly1 looks like she's trying to figure him out...is it a bird...or isn't it? haha
~~~~~~~~~~

What? Doesn't everybody love standing, facing the door, waiting til their other half repeatedly adjusts for the perfect lighting and the perfect angle... and proceeds to take ten or more pictures in order to get the perfect picture of a Portuguese Rooster on the back of a Portuguese Cultural Club Polo?

...heehee... my sweet, patient hubby did! His parents were very involved with this club. As teens, Mr. B, his brother & 2 sisters were members too. The hip, cool group of teens performed traditional dances and sang. (I wish I had some of those photos...but maybe on another post...for now, I need to stay focused on the Roosters!)

~~~~~~~~~~
...so that fellow rooster fans... is a bit about the roosters that are a part of the Portuguese Culture...
Oh, here's a fella with his chest all puffed up! "Mr. Rooster"
(Personalized Sketches copy of an original)
*Click on image to see it is drawn entirely with the name: FRANK*
~~~~~~~~~~

And with a Mr. ...here's a Mrs....

(Personalized Sketches copy of an original)
*Click on image to see it is drawn entirely with the name: DOT*

I love your Portuguese Roosters, they are just adorable and have my mouth watering....lol..My DIL, Ronnie's wife is 1/2 Portuguese, her Grandparents on her Daddy's side came over from Portugal in the 20's.
They shortened their name to Marshall to be more American. I will have to ask Mindy what it was originally. I would love to register for the gift certificate. You are so talented.

Hi! I just downloaded your button and I will upload it on my blog soon. I have a Portuguese rooster too that I bought from Fatima. I never really knew its significance till now. Thanks for the info. I have to ask you. How do you upload a video from youtube? As usual your drawings are beautiful. I can't think of what type of drawing I would want right now. I like seeing everything you post here. My kids do not live near me, they are all in FL. I used to live in FL too but moved 2 and 1/2 years ago due to hubby's job but I still have a home in FL...Christine

Hi Its me,you stopped over at my place a few days ago... I was telling my 15yr daughter about you.
She is an artist. Monday in school she was playing around and did her name in a drawing just messing around after she had her work done in that class.. When she was finished the boy next to her in class ask if he could have it to hang on his wall at home! So she gave it to him, I did not get to see it, then the next day you joined my blog, with your wonderful art work..She has not seen your work yet but we were talking about it again on the way to school, and how much are lives are some what alike.. I am married to a Dentist, my daughter has had her art work put up for auction, My daughter also acts and has done the same play that your son was in. I am recovering from cancer again... I think your work is wonderful and do plan to spread the word on my blog... I am so slow these days... Thank you so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day..

The Galo de Barcelos is common place around my place!

We live in Barcelos!! Small world, huh?!

At the 600 year old market in town, they sell these little ceramic roosters by the thousands. Folks come from all over Portugal, specifically tourists, to buy their roosters here.

Your drawing is beautiful...and VERY authentic!!

And to make the world even smaller, before we moved to Portugal we lived in LaGrange, Ga.

We could be related...
;)

It's so good to meet you!!

I'll be back soon....

Hey Maria:

Thanks for stopping by today and for all your super sweet comments! Did you enter the 250 custom card giveaway? That ends tomorrow and cards with one of your drawings, maybe saying Thank You over and over would be a fun way for you to enclose a nice note to your customers when you send them your order.

There must be something about roosters, my mom loves them. She has a really big one on the top of her shelves in the kitchen. She also love Polish pottery, hm...were you two seperated at birth, LOL! The similarities coming out are beginning to add up.

PS: Thanks for answering the question about color. Because it'd be fun to have one for ER but she'd want color. I wasn't goint to enter but what the heck!

I really like how you did a couple's monogram and of course I also loved the Kappa Delta nautilus shell. BTW way have I mentioned yet how amazed I am by the sheer variety of things you draw. I mean even the geek squad! Sorry for the comment that went on and on...

How exciting! Your sketches are phenomenal. I even draw stick figures badly:) I adore rooster and was glued to the screen reading this. The rooster is also the symbol of France. Napoleon tried to change it to the more regal eagle but that it never caught on. Cockadoodledoo!

Okay, so ....not only do we have our gorgeous dental student girl in common, but I am also of Portuguese descent. My mother was Portuguese, father was Spanish. I lived in both countries in my youth. You can read about my story on my blog, it's titled, "A little spanish girl and a tall tree". It's about my childhood and why I came to the US.
I'll see if I can do a rooster post..I sure have enough of them. Loved you video and your sketches. You are so talented.

What a fabulous story/post! I love your artwork and I love your rooster. How sentimental. I love stories like that! If I won, I would like something beachy, such as a starfish, or a seashell with my last name on it. OH! I also LOVE trees. And it would be a "family tree" because of the name. I would like that too. So many possibilities!

I love the babies that you draw with their name. I think they are so sweet. I would love to have the name and meaning of the name under the name under the drawing. To me names and thier meanings are so important.

I picked Josiah for my little one because it means God heals, God saves, God redeems. God gave me this little one when I wasn´t supposed to be able to try for a year because of hormone problems.
